“It’s the theatre restaurant of the mind…”

Auditions open for ‘The Power of Monkey Island’!

The time has come, once again, to open the doors for Nightlight to those few, those lucky few, who would like to join! With the success of Beneath Monkey Island, scripts are being written and lines are being recorded for a new radio play called ‘The Power of Monkey Island’.

What will happen in it, I hear you ask? The capture and trial of LeChuck, a mysterious voodoo curse, the rise of a new enemy, swashbuckling, and monkeys all await Guybrush and Carl!

Currently there are five roles open for audition:

Governor Phineas Phatt (appearing in five parts)
The blubbery governor of Phatt Island should be spoken with bored detachment to everything. In the trial run of the script I spoke him with a snide voice like Alan Rickman (Snape from Harry Potter). It worked well, but I’m sure there’s better Alan Rickman impersonations out there…
Sample line: Good work, Sir Creigh Blue. I’ll be sure that you are properly rewarded. This has been a dreadful bore… stewards, surely there’s a meal I’m missing, isn’t there? Please, take me away from this.

Elaine Marley-Threepwood (appearing in one part)
Everyone knows who she is, don’t they?
Sample line: Guybrush? What are you doing here! It’s five o’clock, you’re meant to be walking the poodles!

Voodoo Lady (appearing in one part)
A deep Caribbean accent.
Sample line: Don’t go touching any of that, Carl. I know where everything is!

Kolomana (appearing in four to five parts)
A witch doctor. Needs to have a deep presence, a smooth, sinister voice. Can be played with a Caribbean accent if desired, try something out.
Sample line: Guybrush Threepwood, of course I’ve heard of you. May I just say that your reputation is completely unfounded.

Pasty teenager (appearing in one part)
No name as of yet, an exaggerated voice breaking part needed. Think of a pimply teenager working at a fast food joint.
Sample line: Would you like chocolate sprinkles on your venti buccacino (buck-a-chee-no)?

Murray (appearing in one part)
It would be good to have everyone’s favourite evil demonic skull for one part.

Additional voices
Got something to contribute? Always had the urge to swash a few buckles? Want to show off your ‘arrrr’? Then hey, who am I to stand in the way. If you have a voice that you want to try out, then by all means, email it to me. You might end up with a character written for you, it’s happened before…

As always, your voice and microphone clarity are equally important. Anything crackly or tinny won’t really cut it. So if you’re interested, dust off your microphone, make sure the house is empty, and put on a voice! Send all submissions through to galactichand at hotmail.com.

[...] I think it’s safe to say that auditions for ‘The Power of Monkey Island’ have been a success. It maybe goes to show the population of Nightlight listeners / Monkey Island fans when I announce that there were no ladies amongst the auditions! As a result, the roles of the Voodoo Lady and Elaine are still open, and you can give it a go by going to the original audition entry. [...]
